The problem we shall see next is this: is there a concentration of tourism wealth worldwide? If it does exist: What are the variables that produce this concentration?
The first thing we can point out is that when we analyze the absolute position of the main world tourist destinations, we conclude that there are more or less 30 countries, out of a total of 180 countries, leading this activity at the hemispheric level. That is to say, 17% of the world’s destinations are really the countries privileged in attracting international tourism. Similarly, we can also point out that in an absolute way, France and the United States of America are the main recipients of tourism (Schlüter and Rey, 1992: 92-93). However, we shall see later that if the examination is carried out from the relative point of view, that is, by applying certain indicators to order the countries, then the result may be another.
