Resumo

A sustentabilidade tornou-se um termo recorrente na agenda política da maioria dos governos e organizações internacionais, assim como em documentos de empresas de turismo, organizações não governamentais e, naturalmente, na agenda dos pesquisadores. Apesar disso, há consenso geral de que, na realidade, poucos progressos foram feitos na área da sustentabilidade, em geral e no campo do turismo. Esta falta de progresso faz até pensar se este não é um conceito utópico, referindo-se a um estado de harmonia inatingível, que deveria, portanto, ser abandonado o mais rapidamente possível, evitando assim custos de oportunidade desnecessários. Este artigo analisa o estado actual do debate, especialmente no que diz respeito ao turismo sustentável, e apresenta um conjunto de argumentos que justificam a necessidade de aplicar, num momento como o actual, o paradigma do desenvolvimento sustentável à actividade turística.
