Relation between alternative tourism and mass tourism. Typologies for the analysis of the territorial appropriation in the Cancun-Riviera Maya hinterlands

The Cancun-Riviera Maya hinterland is the inland rural region contiguous to the Mexican Caribbean mass-tourism corridor where tourism has been installed as the driver of capital accumulation. Social, private and state alternative tourism enterprises coexist offering experiences based on the access to the exuberant tropical jungle and the Mayan culture. The aim of this paper is to analyse the different stages over which this space has been integrated into the tourism dynamics form a regional geographical analysis, that affords an appreciation of the specificities of the process in a delimited portion of territory. Tourism dynamics were analysed using thematic cartography. The typologies presented offer a visual of the complementary nature or subordination of alternative tourism used as a mechanism of territorial appropriation in the process of expansion of capital over geographical space.
