Abstract

More than three decades have passed since Dennison Nash (1981) raised in the journal Current Anthropology the debate on the relevance of tourism as an object of study in Social Anthropology. After this time the question seems to have been completely overcome, since the consolidation of this field of study in the field of discipline is undeniable, not only in North American and Central European universities and research centres, but also in Latin American countries, Spain and Portugal. The expansion of tourism on a world scale, its kaleidoscopic effect on many territories transformed into tourist destinations, as well as its role in the contemporary society that emits tourists, make it a phenomenon that is not at all superficial or insignificant, as some might presuppose at the dawn of this field of anthropological study.
