Poder, altruísmo e turismo comunitário: Um estudo comparativo

Resumo

Os moradores de San Juan La Laguna e San Pedro La Laguna, duas cidades vizinhas na bacia do Lago Atitlán (Guatemala), têm seguido caminhos muito diferentes de desenvolvimento turístico, apesar de sua proximidade. Este estudo avalia a utilidade da Teoria do Intercâmbio Social (SET) sob diferentes modelos econômicos. Um estudo de caso comparativo é realizado combinando métodos qualitativos e quantitativos, a fim de explorar as percepções dos moradores sobre as vantagens e desvantagens derivadas do desenvolvimento turístico de suas aldeias. Os resultados indicam que SET pode explicar as trocas sob um modelo econômico liberal, mas não sob um modelo comunitário. Os resultados também sugerem que uma forte colaboração comunitária guiada por organizações governamentais e não governamentais pode ajudar a sustentar os benefícios do turismo nas comunidades de destino, ao mesmo tempo em que evita alguns dos seus custos.

Dr. Chantell LaPan received her PhD in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management in 2014 from North Carolina State University. Her research focuses on poverty alleviation and well-being through tourism development, with a focus on micro-entrepreneurship and issues of social justice including gender, indigenous rights and equity.
