Wines and Cuelchas: Territorial Identity in the Itata Valley, Ñuble, Chile

Community-based cultural tourism constitutes a strategic alternative for sustainable territorial development in rural contexts affected by socio-economic lag. The objective of this study is to assess the tourism potential of cultural and productive heritage associated with traditional vitiviniculture and cuelcha craftsmanship in the municipalities of Portezuelo and Ránquil. This is achieved through a mixed-methods approach, combining resource inventories, fieldwork, interviews, community co-creation workshops, and the application of the Tourism Potential Index (TPI). The findings reveal a high potential in wine-tourism resources and identity-based festivities, as well as gaps in services and infrastructure affecting cultural and historical assets. The study highlights the importance of participatory design in preventing the folklorization of heritage and strengthening community empowerment. It concludes that cultural tourism, when planned from a territorial perspective and grounded in local participation, represents an effective tool for heritage valorization and local development.
