Relationship between Tourism and Archaeology: Archaeological Tourism, an own tourism typology

Archaeology is a science that aims at the knowledge of history and prehistory in order to put it at the service of society. For this reason, its relations with the tourism industry are essential since it contributes to the achievement of its objectives through the generation of income that supports the preservation; research; conservation and diffusion of the archaeological heritage.
This article presents the relationships that contribute to the definition of a tourism typology based on archaeological heritage, taking into account its particularities. It also explains the relations between the two disciplines based on a review of the concept of archaeological tourism and its role as an economic development tool.
