Resumo

O crescente impulso do Community-based tourism (CBT) como via para um turismo sustentável e estratégia para o desenvolvimento social nos obriga a aprofundar sua compreensão. Neste artigo propomos como tática teórico-metodológica a focalização analítica na comunidade. A referência empírica da investigação é o turismo comunitário (TC) no Equador, onde foram selecionadas cinco comunidades para realizar um estudo etnográfico em profundidade. Como uma conclusão coloca- nós um quadro detalhado do TC que tem três pilares básicos: a centralidade analítica das comunidades, a consideração do TC como ‘tradução’ antes de como ‘adaptação’ ao mercado, e o caráter fortalecedor —antes que debilitador— do TC para as comunidades. Daqui derivam uma série de indicadores qualitativos que servem para encarar, do ponto de vista teórico, a compreensão geral do CBT e também são úteis para a avaliação da sustentabilidade de projetos e experiências da CBT.
