Social Sustainability and “Touristification”: The Case of Querétaro’s Historical City Centre (Mexico)

Resumo

O turismo patrimonial está a impulsionar a turistificação nos centros históricos da América Latina, provocando gentrificação e despovoamento. Esses processos afetam o valor residencial e patrimonial dessas áreas, colocando em risco a sustentabilidade social do turismo. Este estudo analisa as percepções dos residentes do centro histórico de Querétaro, Património Mundial da UNESCO, sobre os impactos do turismo. Por meio de uma abordagem quantitativa, foi aplicado um questionário baseado em estudos prévios. Os resultados confirmam a Teoria da Troca Social, uma vez que os residentes priorizam os benefícios do turismo em relação aos seus custos. Eles valorizam especialmente seu impacto econômico e a geração de empregos, considerando-o essencial para o futuro da cidade. No entanto, também são identificadas preocupações como o tráfego, a congestão de pedestres, o acúmulo de resíduos e o aumento dos preços da habitação. Os resultados contribuem para o debate académico sobre a turistificação dos centros históricos e fornecem informações relevantes para o desenvolvimento de estratégias sustentáveis que equilibrem a atividade turística com as necessidades das comunidades locais.

Driselda Sánchez-Aguirre, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

Driselda Sánchez-Aguirre holds a PhD in Economic and Management Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro. She is a member of the Mexican National System of Researchers at level I. Her research focuses on competitiveness, heritage and tourism.

Luis Alfonso Escudero-Gómez, Universidad de las Islas Baleares

Luis Alfonso Escudero-Gómez earned his PhD in Geography from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 2000. He is a lecturer in Human Geography in the Department of Geography at the University of the Balearic Islands. His research focuses on urban studies, with a particular interest in urban cultural tourism and the challenges that heritage tourism poses in historic centers.
