This article discusses the importance of the attributes of a tourist destination to position it as a host city for trade fairs. It aims to understand what factors linked to the tourism on offer influence the choice of the city to hold this type of event. The city of São Paulo was adopted as the object of this study because of its great diversity of equipment and services. The results were analysed using the Importance-Performance Analysis model, supported by responses from 156 key agents. First, they evaluated the importance of 32 attributes of tourist destinations to host trade fairs and, subsequently, indicated how well the attributes of São Paulo met these expectations. The findings revealed that for São Paulo to attract more trade fairs in the future, it must undertake actions to bring down costs, expand health protocols and improve public safety. It is felt that the attributes identified and the methodology use may be applicable in other destinations.
