State, land rent and concentration of tourism on the southern coast of Nayarit (Mexico): 1970-2023

Bahía de Banderas in western Mexico will exemplify what has happened in the country's tourist areas for several decades. We will expose the role of neoliberal policies that contributed to generating a residential and second-home tourism boom through the territorial concentration of tourism capital and a phenomenon of social dualism. We will base the research on official data, legal documents, interviews, digital press and websites for selling and renting land and houses. The main conclusion we will reach is that the economic surplus that is the source of the growth of tourism investments is based on the privatization of expropriated lands, the rents and prices they generate, the development of communications, the depreciation of the Mexican peso and the control of tourism.
