Abstract

This article presents a comparative analysis of views expressed on the Cathedral of Mallorca in travel literature written in the first half of the 19th century. Based on a selection of seven authors of different nationalities we have extracted several items in common, in order to assess the similarities and differences between them. These items are linked to the treatment offered by each traveller of certain elements of the temple. By means of this study we will be able to determine which elements or aspects of the Cathedral were the most commented, analysing the way in which they were approached by each author. In addition, these travel books constitute clear antecedents of future tourist guides.

Author Biography

Maria del Mar Escalas Martín, Universitat de les Illes Balears

Maria del Mar Escalas Martín (Mallorca, 1991) holds a PhD in Art History (2021, UIB) with the doctoral thesis entitled "La reforma de la capilla del Santísimo de la Catedral de Mallorca. Antecedents and consequences of Miquel Barceló's intervention", with the qualification of Excellent Cum Laude. She has a degree in Art History (2013, UIB) and has completed the Master's Degree in Teacher Training (2014, UIB) and the Master's Degree in Cultural Heritage: Research and Management (2016, UIB).
She has worked as a documentalist, both in the assessment and historical-artistic monitoring of restorations and in the publication of books. She has participated in different research projects developed by the Conservation of Religious Artistic Heritage group (CPAR). He has also published several studies, both in the form of book chapters and journal articles, most of them related to the Cathedral of Mallorca and its heritage.
