Professionalization, Tourism, competitiveness and sustainabilityAbstract
This investigation focuses on the apparently inexplicable sharp decline in popularity and tourist numbers (-42.19%)experienced by the tourist destination of Tequisquiapan, Qro in 2006, after various several years of steady growth. Various hypotheses have been forwarded by the stakeholders in the hotel sector for the decline: The decreased competitiveness of the tour companies, the lack of sustainable development, and subsequent stagnation and deterioration of the product on offer, the quality of the contracted services and the general lack of professionalism, among others. The local employees offer their versions of the context as experienced by them, commenting on the authorities attitudes and the reactions of the owners and other sectors of the local society to the decline in demand for accommodation.
