The industry-academia relationship in Brazilian Tourism Higher Education: Faculty’ perceptions

This collective case study looked at the faculty’ perceptions on understanding the nature of the industry-academia relationship using multiple sources: 15 semi-structured interviews with coordinators of undergraduate tourism degrees, an analysis of the program’s curricula, and documentary and bibliographic references. The study has identified five strengths and six problems. Then, we summarize factors that are enabling or holding back a closer industry-academia relationship. The findings indicate that undergraduate thesis, alumni network within tourism organizations, and scientific communication build a strong bond between academia and industry. On the contrary, overemphasizing non-vocational education, a multidisciplinary program content without industry alignment, and pursuing a career in the public sector hinder a more genuine industry-academia relationship. In sum, this study has contributed to understanding the academia’s paths to a closer relationship with the industry, which could narrow the gap between what is expected from students and what they perform in the labor market.
