Community-based tourism and agroecological agriculture in the Ecuadorian Amazon: A cointegration analysis

This study analyses the cointegration relationship between community tourism and agroecological agriculture in the Amazonian provinces of Orellana and Sucumbíos, Ecuador over the period 2010 - 2023. Using a longitudinal quantitative approach based on Johansen cointegration models, 390 productive units were analysed through time series analysis. The results reveal the existence of two statistically significant cointegration vectors, confirming long-term equilibrium relationships between both economic activities. Community tourism showed greater adjustment capacity (coefficients of -1.0766 and 1.2611), acting as the main mechanism of equilibrium within the system. Meanwhile, agroecological agriculture presented stationary behavior (p=0.0153), and community tourism revealed non-stationary evolutionary dynamics. Environmental factors exhibited high statistical significance (p<0.001), confirming their fundamental role as a control variable. These findings provide empirical evidence on the viability of sustainable development models that integrate environmental conservation and economic diversification in Amazonian territories.
