In this work we review a text that went somewhat unnoticed at the time of publication, but which we believe is very fruitful for the debate on tourism research. The author of the book is the sociologist Tomás Mazón, from the University of Alicante. And the object of his writing is the criticism, sometimes scathing, of some of the great Anglo-Saxon theorists of tourism, whom he accuses of being unrealistic, baroque and convoluted, in addition to not having done empirical field work to support their statements. These statements are seen by Mazón as opinions and not as well-founded scientific arguments. Tomás Mazón accuses these gurus of being elitists who only value elite tourism and despise the tourism of the middle and lower classes. In our review, in addition to exposing the arguments of this Spanish sociologist, we will also criticise his view, from Southern Europe, and its underlying bases.
