Starting in 2020, the health emergency caused by COVID-19 generated a global economic crisis, where one of the most affected sectors was tourism. It was only in the first quarter of 2024 that the World Tourism Organization (2024) reported a recovery of 97% of pre-pandemic levels, which indicates an almost complete repair. However, the reactivation of tourism has turned the eyes of academics to the challenges that tourism activity must face as an opportunity to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations. The book "Vectors of Sustainable Innovation: Smart Tourism Organisations and Destinations", proposes a framework that in practice allows for preserving competitiveness and sustainable economic growth as a primary objective of tourism, while fulfilling social responsibilities and reducing the environmental impacts generated through its production and consumption.
