Circular economy and tourism: a multicase study in the hotel sector of the route of emotions

This study analysed Circular Economy (CE) practices in hotels along the Route of Emotions, employing a multiple case study method with data triangulation across three hotel developments. The research revealed a weak perception of Circular Economy within the hotel tourism sector. Hotel managers predominantly focused on sustainability practices such as product and material reuse, selective waste collection, use of organic products, and renewable energies, particularly solar. Keyword analysis from interviews highlighted themes of economy, circularity, environment, energy, sustainability, and community. The study found that hotel managers implemented CE practices in their daily operational processes, though often without comprehensive understanding. Key observations included that existing sustainability practices were more intuitive than strategically planned, solar energy emerged as the most common renewable energy approach, and waste management and product reuse were the primary circular economy implementations. A critical finding was the pivotal role of education in clarifying CE concepts, disseminating sustainable practices, and socialising principles among stakeholders. The researchers concluded that expanding CE knowledge is crucial not just for hotel managers, but for broader society. Enhanced understanding could potentially strengthen sustainable tourism initiatives in the Route of Emotions region, promoting more environmentally conscious practices.
