Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Editorial Processes at PASOS Journal of Tourism and Cultural Heritage

Purpose and Scope

This policy establishes ethical principles for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in PASOS Journal of Tourism and Cultural Heritage, ensuring integrity, transparency, and respect for the rights of authors, readers, and collaborators. It also applies to authors, editors, and reviewers, who must comply with these guidelines in the use of AI in their writing, review, and evaluation processes.

General Principles

  • Transparency: Any application of AI in content production must be clearly disclosed to readers, authors, reviewers, and evaluators. Its use must be indicated like any reference in the text and bibliography, following the APA standard.
  • Responsibility: Participants in each part of the editorial process (authors,  reviewers) will assume ultimate responsibility for content generated or assisted by AI.
  • Reliability and Truthfulness: AI-supported content must be based on reliable and verified sources, avoiding the dissemination of misleading or false information.
  • Respect for Copyright: It will be ensured that AI does not infringe intellectual property rights and that sources are properly acknowledged.
  • Non-Discrimination: Algorithmic bias that may perpetuate stereotypes or generate any type of discrimination will be avoided.

Permitted Uses of AI

  • Assistance in writing and editing texts, always with supervision by the authors of the texts or those responsible for editorial processes, as applicable.
  • Analysis of data and trends to improve content.
  • Automation of administrative processes and content management.
  • Generation of summaries, subtitles, and metadata with review by the authors.
  • Use of AI tools by reviewers to detect plagiarism or improve the quality of the review process, always with final human judgment.

Prohibited Uses of AI

  • Creation of complete articles or modification of others.
  • Manipulation of information to mislead or misinform.
  • Identity impersonation or creation of false testimonials.
  • Use of AI to generate images or texts without verification of their authenticity.
  • Exclusive reliance on AI tools for reviewing work without critical analysis by the person responsible for the review.

Non-Compliance

  • The detection of non-compliance or malpractice will have the same consequences as confirmed plagiarism, proceeding either to the suspension of collaboration or retraction of the publication.

Review and Updates

This policy will be periodically reviewed to adapt to technological advances and ensure its ethical compliance at all times.
