Abstract

Throughout the 20th century, culture has taken on a distinctive role in tourism, particularly in rural areas. Traditions, customs and local identity are endogenous resources that have integrated the rural experience, sought by increasingly demanding tourists. This article will seek to understand the cultural experience lived in Janeiro de Cima, a village in the Interior Centre of Portugal, through the perceptions of various stakeholders of the destination, and identify potential to develop creative alternatives that can improve the overall rural tourism experience. The results show that an integrated approach to tourism development is already being implemented, but there is still potential to exploit existing cultural resources to improve the tourism experience in this village, with all the groups interviewed recognizing the attractive value resulting from the union of traditions with the co-creation of experiences.
