In 1977 Host and Guests was published for the first time. The Anthropology of Tourism, the result of the first national congress on tourism organized by the American Anthropological Association (A.A.A.) and held in Mexico City. Tourism was beginning to be a central theme and concern for anthropologists, and of course, it was also emerging as an important industry with a vital economic force for many developing countries. A new, slightly revised edition came out in 1989 and now, twenty-five years after the congress, numerous socio-cultural, economic, political and tourism system changes have taken place. Valene Smith and Maryann Brent edit Hosts and Guests Revisited: Tourism Issues of the 21st Century, showing the effort of many researchers to understand and analyse tourism
