Mass tourism developments in the 1960s allow the emergence of a local tourist entrepreneurial class in the Spanish Mediterranean and the Canary Islands. This new class, together with European wholesalers and the Franco-French public administration, are the key players in the economic process which has had economic implications, environmental, social and political aspects of these regions to this day. In addition to the usual economic analyses of the local tourist entrepreneurial class, this article aims to provide a historical, political and comparative overview of the conditions that helped to create local entrepreneurship. For this, the example of Mallorca is taken with paradigmatic tints.
