Turismo y sitios arqueológicos en las Islas Shetland del Sur, Antártida.

Resumen

Las investigaciones arqueológicas desarrolladas en las últimas tres décadas en las Islas Shetland del Sur contribuyeron a conocer la significación histórica, la diversidad, localización y características específicas de los sitios loberos-balleneros del siglo XIX. Su conservación es un tema que se ha venido tratando en diversos contextos vinculados al patrimonio polar. Se propone que el turismo desarrollado en las Islas Shetland del Sur puede ser interpretado como oportunidad para visibilizar no sólo los restos arqueológicos, sino también las historias que ellos testimonian. El objeto de este trabajo fue analizar las formas y tendencias del desarrollo de la actividad turística en las islas en la última década y evaluar coincidencias actuales entre los puntos de desembarco utilizados y los lugares donde se ubican los antiguos emplazamientos loberos-balleneros del siglo XIX. Para esto se procesó la información provista por la Asociación Internacional de Operadores Turísticos Antárticos (IAATO) desde 2003. A partir de este diagnóstico se busca contribuir a la elaboración de futuras propuestas para visibilizar los sitios y su relevancia histórica y así articular la educación de los visitantes, las investigaciones arqueológicas y la creación de políticas hacia la conservación y valoración del patrimonio antártico.
