In the Spanish context, the role of rural tourism has become increasingly relevant, with a growing trend in both the number of reservations and accommodation, and with growth exceeding that of tourism in general. This incipient type of tourism is an ideal complement to the traditional Spanish tourism model, which has been based mainly on the sun and beach binomial. For all these reasons, it is considered an engine for the creation of wealth in traditionally depressed areas. This work, coordinated by Pulido Fernán-Dez and published in 2008, contributes to this current issue by providing a detailed conceptual framework and analysis of the development of Spanish rural tourism.
