Abstract

In this study we report on the current situation of traditional goods and knowledge in a rural community in Peru. We visited and interviewed approximately 45% of the local population, who indicated that their assets and traditional knowledge are being lost rapidly, mainly stimulated by their young relatives and adolescents who acquire alienated behavior in the large cities to which they migrate. We obtained 243 traditional objects as donations, several of them over 200 years old. These objects were cleaned, described and handed over to the local authorities to manage the installation of a museum, as well as for restoration, conservation and study. Based on our results, we discussed the importance of revaluing traditional culture as a source of social development, contributing mainly to the economy (through tourism), education and the environment. Traditional objects and knowledge have deep respect for nature and are therefore ecologically friendly.
